Paralympic Swim Trials 2012

Erin Popovich winning a Gold Medal at 2008 Paralympics in China

I was able to experience something amazing this week.  I am so inspired.

Bismarck, North Dakota Aquatic Center has been hosting the Paralympic Swim Trials this week.  The swimmers are competing for a chance to swim in London in the Paralympic games this summer.

On Monday Erin Popovichn a 19 medalist 14 of which are gold, came to speak to the kids and parents of Z’s swim club.  She spoke for an hour.  What an inspiration.  She was born with a form of dwarfism and started swimming when she was about 12 or 13.  She has participated in 3 Paralympics and retired from swimming in 2010.  She spoke about her journey as well as other athletes who are competing this week.

I was able to volunteer to work a part of the meet.  Watching these men and women compete who have either physical or mental disabilities was so inspiring.  Some of them had their disability since birth, some developed them later on, others had accidents, and still others lost limbs in Iraq or Afganistan.  Even as world records fell, I kept thinking, ” Wow if these men and women can do this, what can I do with all of my abilities?”

If you ever have a chance to go to a paralympics trials in swimming or other sporting event, I highly recommend it.  You will leave inspired.
