Dallas – The TV Series

So have you started watching it…Dallas, the TV series on TNT on Wednesday evenings?  I have thanks to my DVR.

I realize you would have to be at least 35 years old to remember the 1980 huge deal, Who Shot JR?  But Dallas on CBS was a huge TV sensation back in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s.  One of the shows to have the largest audience was the time in 1980 when everyone wanted to know “Who Shot JR?”

Dallas returned two weeks ago on TNT, so I just had to watch it.  Three of the main characters have returned along with cameos from others from the original series.  It has been fun to see how they have aged.  Yes, I guess that means I have aged from a tween to a 40 something person too.

I was trying to figure out why?  Why after all these years did I want to watch this series?  I think it is the scrapbooker in me.  I love pulling out my old scrapbooks to see the past and think about how things have changed.  That is exactly what I am doing while watching the show.

I also think it is the “love for story”.  I enjoy reading biographies.  I like to hear about other people’s lives.  Watching is like reuniting with long-lost friends and hearing what they have been up to…just catching up even if these characters are fictional.

Finally it is bringing back childhood memories, especially has the intro music plays.  Other than taking out the disco drums, they left the intro music the same.  As soon as I hear it, I fly back in time to our living room on Friday evenings.  Mom was usually reading a book.  My siblings and I were usually trying to do homework and the tv was on.  I always watched The Incredible Hulk (a new series is being developed for 2012), then Dukes of Hazzard, and finishing off with Dallas.  (Ok, I watched too much tv when I was a kid, but that is another story.)  I still can see my Dad sitting in his rocking chair, usually asleep after a long week as a farmer until Mom woke him after the 9:00 news to tell him that it was time for bed.

I am not sure if I hadn’t watched the old series if I would be enjoying this series or not.  So much of the show has been a reference to the past.  I wonder if any of you, who are too young to remember the original series, if you are watching this series or not?  If so, do you like it?

If you do remember the original show, have you watched the new series? Do you like it?

      • Oh yeah. Loved that show. One of the few I remember as well as I do from that time and age. That and probably Guiding Light. If I didn’t see it, Mom kept me up to speed. Loved the show. Loved the football team. Kinda funny how I ended up living in Dallas.

      • Oh yes, Guiding Light. It has been off the air for 3 or 4 years now. Oh and I still love Dallas, the team…much to the chargrin of my husband. 🙂 Next time you go to a game, cheer a little harder for me. (Can you believe we have draft in just 2 months?)
